My two picks from this group are definitely the chair in a shop and the floodlit beach at night. As was the case with my Hasselblad, some of my favorite photographs are from the first time I used a newly purchased camera. I wondered around town with my new Mamiya 7 (a superb piece of equipment). The empty shop was on Lansdown Road in Brighton and as I passed it I couldn't help notice this most amazing direct stream of light running up to the back wall right where the chair was standing. When I look at it, it all makes sense to me because I was there, but it often confuses others until I explain that the photo was taken through a window and there is a lot of reflection from said window of the other side of the street, on the right side of the image. If ever there was an example of being in the right place at the right time, for me, this is it.I find myself often taking very dark photographs - I don't know why? But this scene from the beach in Essaouira, Morocco has long since stuck in my mind, mainly I suppose for its clarity, its space, but also for the fact that it was the last photo at the end of the day and taken using a wall and my coat as a stabilser. |
